Last month, we farewelled Kirk Hope from BusinessNZ and we warmly welcomed Katherine Rich as the new Chief Executive of BusinessNZ. Katherine brings a wealth of experience in policy and advocacy, having led the New Zealand Food & Grocery Council (NZFGC), following a nine-year tenure in Parliament. We look forward to Katherine's leadership through this next phase for BusinessNZ.

Geothermal energy could outperform nuclear power
|
Last year, Fervo completed a successful pilot project in Nevada and secured Google as an early customer. In June, Southern California Edison agreed to buy 320 megawatts of power from Fervo’s larger Utah project, marking the largest-ever power purchase agreement for geothermal energy. On September 10th, Fervo announced it had reduced drilling time by 70% at its Utah site and halved the cost of drilling its fourth well. The company has already surpassed the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2035 targets for geothermal energy. Read more...

AFRY Aurecon JV to design $14.2b Borumba Pumped Hydro Project
|
A joint venture including consultancy Aurecon has been named to design Queensland’s Borumba Pumped Hydro, which will become cornerstone of the state’s energy transformation. This project will provide resilient and secure energy supply of up to 2,000 MW of electricity for up to 24-hours, with storage capacity of 48,000 MWh. Read more...

The YEPN recently took 18 students along to Wiri Hydrogen refuelling station (Hiringa), Huntly Power Station (Genesis) and Karapiro Power Station (Mercury). Designed to educate and inspire students about the energy sector and supported by these organisations, the tour was well received by students and their schools. Feedback on the National Energy Research Institute
|
NERI is a Charitable Trust with members drawn from the universities and CRIs involved in energy research, along with energy related industry associations. Its primary purpose is to promote high quality energy research and education in NZ.
With the various changes occurring in the energy sector and the Government reviewing the NZ science sector NERI is reviewing where best it might contribute in the future. Responses are anonymous and will only be used in aggregate form.

Low emissions heavy vehicle fund
|
The Operators of heavy vehicles can get 25% off the purchase price of new zero and low-emissions options, or 25% off the cost to convert an existing, recently registered vehicle to be powered by low-emissions technology.

This is a major milestone for this technology and a big step towards commercialisation and large-scale deployment.
