Christchurch Airport unveils electric fire truck |
Christchurch Airport has taken another significant step in its commitment to operational excellence and sustainability, taking possession of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first electric fire truck. The technology is also the first electric fire truck at any airport in the Southern Hemisphere. The arrival of the new vehicle is part of the airport’s broader fleet transition programme. | | | |

Budgeted Government spend reflects increased spend on extreme weather | Government is expected to spend approximately $3.55bn on the environment for 2024/25 according to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment’s latest estimate. Against the previous fiscal year, the composition of that expenditure has changed considerably with a significant increase relating to extreme weather events caused by climate change and drops in expenditure in other areas. | | | |

A sustainable marine sector |
A new report by Westpac ‘A Sustainable Marine Sector: Transitioning to a Blue Economy’ has been published exploring how the finance sector can support Aotearoa New Zealand’s transition to a more sustainable “blue economy”. The report estimates that in 2022 the marine sector contributed more than $10bn to the Aotearoa New Zealand economy, and that this figure could increase to $14bn by 2035 if the sector is able to make the shift. | | | |

Fonterra has announced new incentives for farmers | Fonterra has announced new funding, designed to build a stronger Co-operative and grow shareholder value through helping farmers reduce on-farm emissions. For the 2025/26 season a new payment will be introduced for farms that achieve certain emissions-related criteria. New incentives that benefit farmers will be funded through separate agreements with Mars and Nestlé, who have been working with Fonterra. | | | |

Feasibility study for green hydrogen facility published |
EECA has published a new feasibility study with Fortescue, relating to the development of a green hydrogen facility at Marsden Point. The proposed facility aims to produce synthetic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (eSAF) to help decarbonise the aviation sector, particularly for long-haul flights where other emission-reduction technologies might not be feasible. A key component is the integration of demand response capability. | | | |

Sustainability professionals survey currently open | We are inviting all eligible professionals in Aotearoa New Zealand to take part in the latest survey on the sustainability profession in Aotearoa New Zealand. The sixth annual survey has been launched by Oxygen Consulting, in partnership with SBC, AUT, and SBN.
