MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR | Kia ora, Those hoping for a more optimistic start to the year, will be disappointed with the recent PMI (Performance of Manufacturing Index) results announced last week. The seasonally adjusted PMI for December 2023 was 43.1 (a PMI reading below 50.0 indicates that the manufacturing sector is generally declining”. This was a further decrease from November (46.5) and highlights the difficult environment manufacturers have faced in the second half of 2023. We’ve been talking with Engineering Dreams’ Jess Covich about the opportunities to engage with New Zealand’s space industry manufacturers. Engineering Dreams is keen to bring together a group of like-minded companies and people around the country to collaborate, share experiences, and identify opportunities in the industry under the Space Trailblazer initiative. See below for more details and to get in contact with the group. Lastly, ManufacturingNZ would like to congratulate Andrew Bayly on his appointment as Minister for Small Business and Manufacturing. We look forward to working with Minister Bayly and the Government's continued support of manufacturers. Have a great weekend, Josh | Ngā Mihi,

Activity in New Zealand’s manufacturing sector ended in further contraction, according to the latest BNZ – BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI). The seasonally adjusted PMI for December was 43.1 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining). This was down from 46.5 in November and the lowest level of activity since October. It also meant the sector has been in contraction for ten consecutive months.
