SBC and CLC welcome inquiry into bipartisan adaptation framework

SBC and CLC welcome Friday’s announcement from Government around a bipartisan inquiry into an enduring climate adaptation framework for New Zealand, which "will be essential to give certainty to both government and the private sector to make the investments and large-scale changes necessary to adapt to a changing climate."

   

SBC Guide: Developing a sustainability strategy

Businesses need a strategy to be successful – and the same goes for sustainability efforts. In this second SBC Guide, co-created with thinkstep-anz and Kaitiaki Collective and supported by our ESG working group, we first look at why sustainability strategies are so crucial to success before delving into some practical guidelines for creating your own sustainability strategy.

Yesterday we bid a fond (temporary) farewell to our Head of Communications and Events, Rebecca Lowe, as she heads off on parental leave. We are pleased to share that Kate Barlow has joined the SBC team as our Acting Head of Comms and Events. Extending a very warm welcome to Kate and warm wishes to Rebecca as she embarks on a new adventure!

   

NZ ETS Unit Settings consultation open for 2024

Consultation is now open on the Government’s annual review of auction settings and other regulations for the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZ ETS). The unit limit settings of the ETS help “cap” the supply of units over time to keep emissions in line with greenhouse gas reduction targets. Have your say on the ETS settings here.

   

Future Focus: WBCSD key trends to look out for in 2024

At their recent Global Network Partner meeting, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) re-released its key trends shaping the sustainable business agenda this year. Trends include a tipping point of corporate accountability as well as whether AI is a ‘saviour or supervillain’ for sustainable development. Read the full breakdown of trends here.

   

Ministry for the Environment releases Climate Scenarios Toolkit

The Ministry for the Environment has published a toolkit with information about different climate change scenarios and the impact they may have. It is specifically designed to provide central government agencies with relevant climate scenarios information to test policies and decision making, but may be useful for the private sector as well. Check out the toolkit here.

Community of Practice - Sustainability during a recession

CLC Masterclass Series: How can climate action plans support the restoration of nature?

NEW: Speed up scope 3 accounting with spend-based carbon emissions factors (thinkstep-anz and Cogo)

To date, organisations comprehensively reporting scope 3 had to choose between detailed material-based assessments or spend based-analysis using old or international emission factors. thinkstep-anz’s New Zealand specific and annually updated emission factors make spend-based scope 3 reporting easier and more accurate. Spend-based emission factors build on the financial data businesses already have and link those data to the emissions from a good or service per dollar spent. Join Cogo’s Chief Impact Officer Brian Johnston and thinkstep-anz’s Technical Director Jeff Vickers as they explain how businesses can benefit from using local EEIO emission factors.
