| | | | MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR | Kia ora! The year is moving quickly and activity is picking up in our sector!
The PMI results for February shows improvement, rising 1.8 points from 47.5 in January to 49.3 – the highest reading in a year. Despite the positive signs, the sector remains in a “contracting” state (a PMI reading below 50.0 indicates that the manufacturing sector is generally declining). The sluggish result stems from slow new orders and lower production levels, while improvements to delivery times and easing pressure on staffing levels are helping the sector. We’re helping to promote a couple of events from our friends at the BusinessNZ Energy Council that will be relevant to manufacturers. One of the events is focusing on Germany’s journey towards their net-zero targets and what New Zealand industries can learn from them, while the other will discuss the potential for an off-shore wind energy sector – see more below.

Activity in New Zealand’s manufacturing sector continued to show improvement in February, but still remained in contraction, according to the latest BNZ – BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).
The seasonally adjusted PMI for February was 49.3 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining). This was up from 47.5 in January and the highest level of activity since February 2023. However, the sector has now been in contraction for 12 consecutive months.
