The World Energy Council – Germany invites the New Zealand energy community to contribute to the international survey “Perspectives on the German Energy Transition.” Since 2011, the survey has collected global viewpoints on Germany’s climate and energy strategies. BEC supports the work done by MBIE in the review of New Zealand’s fuel standards. This review is expected to improve the alignment of fuel standards and vehicle standards, which will subsequently ensure consumer protection while aligning with international standards. BEC is currently working on a submission for the EA's level playing field measures - options paper. BEC is currently considering working on a submission for the EECA's green paper on its targeted investment approach. The Electricity Authority have recently released a review of electricity prices over the winter of 2024. July and mid-August 2024 spot prices were much higher than average for winter. Between 2018 and 2023, the average winter price was around $180/MWh. However, in early August the average daily price reached $820/MWh. These high prices resulted from high electricity demand and and low wind generation during a fuel shortage, due to low hydro storage and gas supply. Read more...

Energy Minister breaks ground on Northland's first wind farm | Mercury Chief Executive Stew Hamilton and Energy Minister Simon Watts recently broke the ground of the $287 million Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm, near Dargaville. The 77MW (221GWh p.a.) wind farm, which is Northland’s first, will generate enough renewable electricity to power about 27,000 homes - equivalent to powering the Far North. Read more...

Elemental Group seeking development partner for offshore wind | BlueFloat Energy announced they were exiting NZ late last year as part of a global strategic review process. With that process complete, Elemental Group now own all the IP for both offshore wind energy projects - South Taranaki and Waikato. They're continuing the detailed work to date and aim to apply for feasibility licences when the process opens later this year. They are also seeking a development partner. TR Group expands hydrogen truck range | TR Group has launched its hydogen 50-tonne prime mover - produced in partnership with Global Bus Ventures and Toyota New Zealand. This truck offers a practical zero-emissions solution for heavy freight transport and can operate with conventional trailers and loads.
