Government launches new 5-part Climate Strategy

SBC and CLC welcome the newly launched Climate Strategy from the Government, particularly the ongoing commitment laid out in the strategy to meeting NZ's climate change targets and budgets. We are eagerly anticipating the detail set out in the second emissions reduction plan that will enable the action to meet these, and we look forward to working with members to respond to the draft.

A number of the key findings from Better Futures 2024 signal a compelling value proposition for delivering positive social impact and reflect the need to dig deeper to understand the impact of these issues on commercial success. MBIE consultation opens on carbon capture regulatory regime

This week, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment opened consultation on the Government's proposed approach to enabling carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). The consultation covers how CCUS is treated under the ETS, consenting, monitoring regimes, liability, and the use of the captured carbon. Learn more and have your say here.

   

Greater alignment between GHG protocol and ISSB

Recently the GHG Protocol and the IFRS Foundation agreed to guide future work and collaboration between GHG Protocol and the ISSB. As WBCSD CEO Peter Bakker said: "Closer alignment between both organizations will facilitate and harmonize disclosure efforts for business and investors on emissions, drive action and enable greater accountability and transparency." In this 20-minute clip from a recent Activate the Allies session, Kate Wilson Butler from Chapman Tripp outlines what this legislation means for New Zealand businesses and how to communicate about sustainability without getting into tricky greenwashing territory. 

       

    OfficeMax hits emissions reduction milestone with fleet electrification

    OfficeMax New Zealand has significantly reduced carbon emissions associated with vehicle fuel consumption following the transition of its entire vehicle fleet to EVs and hybrids. "The fleet transition underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship through reducing our carbon emissions...we are incredibly grateful and proud of the team for their support for this initiative."

    As mandatory sustainability reporting and disclosures increase, the latest Proxima thinks! article looks at research and evidence from across the globe to find out if it is actually making a difference. The conclusion is that better information is needed, rather than more information, and that urgency, technology and a state-driven vision are converging to accelerate the transition.

    This new whitepaper from the Ākina Foundation provides a detailed analysis of how social investment could work in New Zealand, offering insights into its benefits, challenges, and opportunities.     NEW: WBCSD consultation on the Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD)

    WBCSD invites SBC members to an online APAC consultation on the proposed TISFD model and design before its September launch. It will solicit feedback from the Asia-Pacific region and gives SBC members an ideal opportunity to provide feedback and bring Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique perspectives into the design process.     Input into the second emissions reduction plan

    (This event is open to SBC, CLC and BEC members only) Consultation is set to open soon on the draft second emissions reduction plan containing the strategies, policies and actions the Government is setting to achieve the second emissions budget (2026 – 2030). To help members respond to the consultation, the Sustainable Business Council, Climate Leaders Coalition and Business Energy Council will be hosting an initial online session in which MfE experts will present on the content of the draft document, followed by a Q&A. We anticipate this session taking place on 19 July (pending consultation release date).

    Aurecon and the Sustainable Business Council are partnering to deliver a three-part workshop series to help businesses get ready for a sustainable, climate-resilient future.
