Sustainability professionals, we want to hear from you!

The latest survey on the sustainability profession in Aotearoa New Zealand has opened, and we are inviting all eligible professionals in Aotearoa New Zealand to take part. The sixth annual survey has been launched by Oxygen Consulting, in partnership with SBC, AUT, and SBN. It is open from 7 February–7 March to people currently working in Aotearoa New Zealand who have sustainability as part of or all of their role. Complete the survey here.

   

SBC Connects: Leadership in a Changing Landscape

Our SBC Connects event will be a chance for members to reconnect with business leaders and deep dive into the changing sustainability landscape. Lisa Davis, CEO of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust, will share insights on an exemplary new Climate Impact Statement. Our newest Advisory Board Members will discuss the challenges facing executives and sustainability leaders as we head into 2025.

   

Greenhouse gas emissions down

Seasonally adjusted industry and household greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Aotearoa New Zealand, decreased 0.7% (136 kt) in the September 2024 quarter, according to figures released by Stats NZ. "The decrease in emissions this quarter came mainly from manufacturing, with falls in emissions recorded in most other industries," environment statistics spokesperson Tehseen Islam said.

   

Genesis and Foresta in biomass supply negotiation

Genesis Energy and Foresta have signed a term sheet to advance negotiations on the supply of torrefied biomass for electricity generation at Huntly Power Station. This is the first term-sheet Genesis has signed with a potential Aotearoa New Zealand producer of biomass as it seeks to establish a sustainable, economical supply for the power station.

   

EcoChoice Aotearoa EoI for Technical Advisory Panel

EcoChoice Aotearoa is establishing a Technical Advisory Panel to provide crucial insights and technical feedback on the development and revision of their standards. Expressions of interest are welcome from industry professionals and academics with expertise in environmental or social sustainability, particularly in: Circular Economy, ISO Standards (14024), Modern Slavery, Building and Development, Digital Product Passports, Carbon and Energy.

       

    EDS guide to Fast-track Approvals Act goes live

    The Environmental Defence Society has launched a guide to the Fast-track Approvals ActApplications for consents under the act went live last week. The Guide is designed by EDS as an up-to-date one-stop shop for those wishing to understand our legislative and regulatory environmental regime.

       

    Industrial heat: an overlooked piece in the decarbonisation puzzle

    A new WBCSD article examines the best practices of policy approaches to industrial process heat decarbonisation, emphasising how value chain collaboration amongst businesses and targeted policy support are key to drive meaningful change and ensure industrial process heat is no longer the missing piece of the decarbonisation puzzle.
