Last month, we visited NZ Steel in Auckland and were amazed by the steel-making process. We met Alan Eyes and three impressive young women—Nicola Payne, Ruth Marsh, and Lily Du—who are shaping the industry’s future. NZ Steel is building an electric arc furnace to cut coal use by 50%, reducing emissions equivalent to 300,000 cars (1% of NZ’s total emissions). They also aim to become a green energy hub, collaborating with Contact Energy on the first project onsite. Contact Energy's 100MW battery project, which will enhance energy storage and security, providing enough electricity to meet peak demand for 44,000 homes over two hours during winter..

Less than a year after launching a hedge fund dedicated to the green energy transition, its founder says there’s currently no financial gain to be had from investing in renewable power. “The whole sector — solar, wind, hydrogen, fuel cells — anything clean is dead for now,” said Nishant Gupta, founder and chief investment officer at London-based Kanou Capital LLP. Skyrocketing traffic management costs flow through to power bills | Electricity Networks Aotearoa (ENA) says temporary traffic management costs for lines companies have surged 208% since 2019 — and they're still climbing. Nationwide analysis — by Beca and commissioned by ENA — shows daily costs could rise from $785 in 2019 to $2,947 by 2026 if nothing changes. These rising costs flow through to power bills. Flex solution opportunities | Powerco is seeking expressions of interest from flex providers such as retailers (or aggregators) and large-scale customers who are interested in contracting with the company to provide flex solutions on its electricity network. Mt Maunganui and Waihi Beach are the first of a number of opportunities the electricity distributor has identified on its network where it hopes to implement flex solutions. Ruakākā Solar Farm gains planning consent | Meridian Energy has been granted final consent approval by the Environment Court to build its 120MW Ruakākā Solar Farm in Tai Tokerau Northland. Meridian Chief Executive Neal Barclay says it is a project that will provide big benefits to Northland’s resilience and New Zealand’s generation capacity. With up to 250,000 solar panels, the Ruakākā Solar Farm, south of Whangārei, will be capable of producing up to 200GWh of electricity per year – enough to power around half the homes in Northland.
