Spain, Portugal switch back on, seek answers after biggest ever black out | Spain and Portugal recently had their worst blackouts in history, with authorities offering little explanation for what caused it or the likelihood of it happening again. Commuters battled with delays to get back to work after an outage that left people stranded in lifts, stuck in traffic and unable to contact families. There are two recent submissions from BEC. One is on EECA’s green paper on their new targeted investment approach. This was submitted on the 29th of April. BECs stance is that the proposed financial tools should be aimed at addressing the costs in businesses transitioning away from gas. BEC sees concessional loans as the best of the provided options, but market-enabling reforms should be considered to complement direct investment. Secondly, BEC is currently working on its submission on the EA’s Level Playing Fields - options paper. Of the four proposed options BEC sees option 2 step 1 as the preferred option but has concerns surrounding steps 2 and 3. Additionally BEC questions whether competition issues is the root cause of affordability issues that the EA is trying to solve. This submission is currently open for member feedback. Updated tree regulations a win for power reliability and cost | Long-awaited changes to outdated tree regulations will help keep the power on and reduce costs for consumers, says Electricity Networks Aotearoa (ENA), following an announcement by Minister Watts. The new regulations, announced in response to years of industry advocacy, will give lines companies the authority to proactively manage hazardous trees near power lines — a move ENA describes as a "positive and overdue step forward."
