Plans for nuclear reactors worldwide | China has been able to approve ten new nuclear reactors each year. The nation has about 36 reactors under development, and will leap frog the US and France as the largest generators of nuclear energy. Only sixteen countries are building reactors, half of them from China. China is able to build reactors at a fraction of the cost of places like France and the US, according to BloombergNEF. That’s in part thanks to low lending rates from supportive state-owned banks. They also build them with the same design, allowing for a skilled work force and ready supply chain, reducing time and money. Read more ...

Our stressed out power grid needs help | Financial Times report that Artificial intelligence is set to use 10 times more power by 2026 than it did last year. With grids already under strain, a disaster may unfold, Marietje Schaake of Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center writes in the Financial Times. Some in the nuclear industry believe fusion will generate power for the grid at a viable cost in the 2030s. If they’re anywhere near right, we need to rethink all our energy assumptions, the UK’s Telegraph says.

Offshore winds next big problem | Bloomberg reports that Offshore wind turbines are getting bigger, with some approaching the size of the Chrysler Building. Offshore turbine demand is poised to quintuple by the end of the decade. Ships capable of installing them are in growing demand, but the fleet isn’t expanding quickly enough. There are 15-20 ships, outside of China, that are able to install the large turbines. There needs to be 20 more in just the next several years to keep up with demand. This would require $15 billion in new ship building. Day rates have jumped from $200,000 in 2022 to $350,000 in 2023.

Rekindling nuclear generation | Bloomberg reports Europe is trying to rekindle nuclear generation. Lead by France, 12 countries will join a first ever nuclear summit in Brussels. The summit is about catapulting atomic energy into the centre of the bloc’s industrial strategy and spark investment. Others are saying it is too late to meet their commitments. There is pushback against more nuclear. New nuclear is costly. The average capital cost is $9million a megawatt, three times as much as in China. The continent’s current nuclear reactors are living on ‘borrowed time’ and will need more investment.

28 & 29 May - Christchurch Town Hall
The window is narrowing and the need to step up in reducing climate change has never been more severe or urgent. Whether referencing staying calm or holding on to the 1.5oC, we’ll be keeping cool. Of course, the coolest place to be at the end of May 2024 will be the Christchurch Town Hall. That’s when the experts, influencers and decision makers that will commission, design and deliver the projects that will take us to our 2030 and 2050 targets will be gathering in one place at the same time. It’s the best opportunity of the year to come together, exchange ideas and learn from each other, all in a relaxed and cool environment. Again for 2024, CEP are partnering with the Bioenergy Association so alternative, clean fuels are very firmly on the agenda again in 2024.
