This week, the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) released the draft second emissions reduction plan, containing the strategies, policies and actions the Government is setting to achieve the second emissions budget (2026-2030). Consultation is now open and will close on 21 August. SBC and CLC will be running a feedback process with members to respond to the document at a strategic level. We have invited members to get involved in the consultation, including through a number of workshops and an information session with MfE. Q&A: Dr Roger Robson-Williams (Plant & Food Research) on nature

As part of our series on sustainability fundamentals, we caught up with our members to get their insights on some of the topics covered in the guides. In this second Q&A, we spoke with Roger Robson-Williams (Chief Sustainability Officer at Plant & Food Research) to get his thoughts on the interdependencies between business and nature, and the importance of making it a priority.

   

The climate action within our control

In the leadup to this year's Climate Change & Business Conference, Gary Taylor (CEO of EDS) penned his thoughts around maintaining a focus on what we can control, not only in reducing Aotearoa New Zealand's own emissions, but also adapting to the effects of climate change to reduce the impact on our communities and (to an extent) our natural world. Overflow applications for COP29 

Applications are now open for access to COP29 via a New Zealand ‘Party overflow’ badge. This process is intended to increase access and inclusivity for business and civil society participants to the UN climate change conference. How-to guide on voluntary carbon credits

WBCSD has launched 'how-to' guidance for businesses seeking to utilise high-integrity voluntary carbon credits to fund activities that go beyond their value chains to reduce or remove emissions. The approach combines both the immediate benefits of natural climate solutions and the long-term need for technology-based solutions for carbon capture. Read the guidance here.

Here’s an article from Toitū Envirocare outlining what they’ve noticed happening abroad in the environmental communications space, along with a New Zealand comparison, what businesses here should and shouldn't be doing, and how they can get started.

       

    New SBTN guidance for business

    The Science-Based Targets Network has released new enabling resources for companies to set science-based targets for nature, enhancing feasibility and practicality while maintaining ambition and scientific rigor. Access technical guidance and supporting resources that are relevant across the target-setting process, including how targets support biodiversity and stakeholder engagement.

       

    Ando Insurance uses Fareshare to encourage low emission commutes

    Ando Insurance has embraced Auckland Transport's Fareshare initiative to enable carbon efficient commuting, subsidising Auckland Public Transport services by 25% for employees. CEO John Lyon highlighted, "This aligns with our sustainability goals and commitment to improving New Zealanders' wellbeing." Click here to read Ando’s press release.

    Input into the second emissions reduction plan

    (SBC and CLC members only) Consultation has opened on the draft second emissions reduction plan containing the strategies, policies and actions the Government is setting to achieve the second emissions budget (2026 – 2030). To help members respond to the consultation, the Sustainable Business Council, Climate Leaders Coalition and Business Energy Council will be hosting an initial online session in which MfE experts will present on the content of the draft document, followed by a Q&A.
